The author conducted extensive interviews to obtain memories and stories about FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt from the people who actually knew them, including Theodore Kheel, Ellie Seagraves (granddaughter), Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (granddaugher), the late Kitty Carlisle Hart, Bethine Church, Robert Rosenman, Schuyler Chapin, Geraldine Ferraro, the late Jeane Kirkpatrick, and Robert Morgenthau.

Also included are quotes from John Eisenhower (son of President Eisenhower), Warren Harding III (great-nephew of President Harding), Francis Sayre, Jr. (grandson of President Wilson), Anne Cox Chambers (daughter of Presidential candidate James Cox).
